Butterfly project

Hi everyone,

I'm sure you have all heard about our butterfly project, which took place for a few weeks before the break. After we received our tiny caterpillars the children thought it would be a good idea to give them names. Every child suggested a name, and we put all of the names into a hat. The "winning" names were Ding-Dong, Abby, Puffy, Lola and Tim.

We soon noticed that they had a huge appetite. They ate... And ate... And ate... (The jar which they lived contained their food.) They grew bigger and bigger and eventually formed a chrysalis on top of the jar. The chrysalides hardened and we transferred them to the butterfly net. They remained here for about a week as chrysalides. Then one morning, we arrived into school and had 5 butterflies! There was huge excitement in the classroom! We fed them orange, apple, banana and fresh flowers. We also made a sugary water drink and sprinkled a few droplets onto the flowers.

We enjoyed our butterflies for a few days in the classroom and then released them into the wild :-) Before we said our goodbyes, the children made some wishes for the butterflies. Here are a few pictures...
