Hi folks,
No homework again this week! All class teachers have been asked to finish homework for the year while we wind down. I would be keen however for the Junior Infants to keep up the reading practice for the last couple of weeks. As of next Monday (13th) I'll send home our final Wonderland reader. There will be no more written homework for the year. I'll also put a few Sails readers into the children's folders for you to practice with them at your own discretion.

There won't be any homework this week as it's a short week. Sinéad has asked all teachers to ease up on the homework from now until the end of the year. So for the remainder of June there will not be any written homework, just some reading practice. This week however there is no homework at all.

Handwriting: Finish last 5 pages of handwriting book.
Sounds: Practice flashcards of single and double
sounds. Cut them up if you wish! Assessment will take place next week on all
sounds covered this year. Please do not focus on the letter name, but rather on
the sound it makes.
Dolch 2: Practice all Dolch 2 words for assessment next week. The Dolch
words are high frequency words, the words we see most often in texts. These
words are sight words and need to be recognised instantly rather than reading
by blending. A lot of these words like “here” cannot be blended by sounding out
individual sounds.
Sails reader: Practice reading book. Apologies, I didn't get a chance to
put books in today. Will do tomorrow.
*Please have homework folders in every day as we’ll

Wednesday: Sound book - 'ou'. Cut up and practice today's flashcard words from class reader 'Gg is Too Big!' (But, make); Read pages 14 & 15 and answer comprehension questions orally.
Thursday: Maths number practice sheet. Cut up and practice today's flashcard words from class reader 'Gg is Too Big!' (too, big); Read page 16 and answer comprehension questions orally.

Last week we started our class reader, The Picnic. Every child in the class has a book in their homework folder and a booklet outlining reading homework for each night. PLEASE SIGN to confirm that your child has done the reading homework. Thanks!
Every night they will be asked to read one page, and answer questions (orally) based on that page. I have also included a sheet of flashcard words which can be used to re-enforce the new words in the reader. It is best if these are cut up, and practiced according to whichever words feature on the page assigned for homework that night. We will be practicing these words in class too, and I will be listening to their reading as well.
Each child will also have a Sails reader in their folder which is switched on a weekly basis. Please focus on The Picnic first. The Sails reader is for additional reading practice, so if there is time children can then read their Sails reader. If reading both exceeds 15 - 20 minutes of homework time, please just stick to reading The Picnic.

Homework for week 4th - 8th April 2016
Welcome back everyone! Homework is as follows...
Monday:
1. Sails reader. The children should use their knowledge of blending/ combining sounds to make words, as well as recognition of Dolch words (sight words) to decode the sentences. There is a lot of repetition in these books, which helps them become familiar with words. The pictures can help them with reading comprehension too. At the back of the book there are sample questions you can ask your child too. I'll swap the books weekly.
2. Next marked page in handwriting book.

1. Dolch words. These are words where the sounds can't be easily blended to make a word. The children need to know these words by sight. The children will work on the Dolch lists at their own ability. When all three booklets have been ticked off, the child can focus on assigned reading book. I am giving out basic reading books to any child who can confidently blend sounds, and who knows all words on Dolch 1. There is no pressure to race through lists. Every child should work at their own pace.
Wednesday - 5 mins on Dolch List and 'oo' sound in My Sounds Booklet (book, look, cook, wool etc. as opposed to school, pool)

No homework tonight!
Hello everyone,
Much to the children's delight (and probably yours too :-) ), we have won a NO HOMEWORK PASS for tonight. The kids have been trying really hard to recycle their rubbish in class. Everyday they are asked to bring home leftover lunches, wrappers and containers in their lunchbags/ lunchboxes. They also know that they're only supposed to put paper, cardboard, tissue and washed out milk cartons into our bin. Every day some of the senior students on the Green Schools Committee check our bins. The boys and girls have improved so much at recycling and last week for the first time we got 5 'green cards' in a row (instead of black!) Because of this we won a night off homework. Homework will resume as normal tomorrow.
Also, just a reminder that we're off school tomorrow at 12pm as there is staff in-service training.

Homework correcting
Just a little note about homework correcting! I take up all the homework folders on a Friday and check/ correct all the week's work at once as well as giving new word booklets/ word lists if needed. I find this saves time during the week. I have noticed that if I correct the homework each day during school-time it takes about 15/ 20 minutes. I prefer to spend this time listening to the children's reading.

Homework for the week!
Here are some rhymes we have been practicing for writing the numbers 1 - 3 correctly:
1 - "A downwards stroke, my that's fun. Now I've made the number 1!"
2 - "Half a heart says I love you. Add a line. Now I've made the number 2!"
3 - "Around the tree, around the tree, that's the way you make a three!"

Homework for the week 25th - 29th Jan
Hi everyone,
As I was out on Monday and Tuesday, there will only be two days of homework this week.

Wednesday: 'ie' page in My Sounds Booklet (It has been dated).Practice writing 'ie' and draw a few pictures of words containing 'ie' like tie, pie, lie etc. Also, 5 minutes on word booklit. Please tick the words off once your child can blend all the individual sounds and say the word. Once the booklit has been completed I will give your child a new set of words.
Thursday: New Maths page in folder (patterns) and 5 minutes on Dolch list. Once again PLEASE TICK off words that your child can recognise.
Homework should take no longer than 15 minutes.

Homework 18th - 22nd January
Homework for the week!
Monday: Handwriting page letter 'a' and 5 minutes on three letter word booklet. PLEASE TICK THE WORDS once they are known. I will give out a new booklet once all of the words have been ticked. Every child should work at their own pace.
Tuesday: Handwriting page letter 'd' and 5 minutes on three letter word booklet. Once again, please tick the words off once your child can blend all the individual sounds and say the word.
Wednesday: 'oa' page in My Sounds Booklet. Practice writing 'oa' and draw a few pictures of words containing 'oa' like boat, coat etc. Also, 5 minutes on Dolch words. Tick off words that are known!
